Cereal supply chain, the CIRCE and SFINGE projects presented, blockchain and cooperation

Genetic certification, blockchain and cooperation were the themes of the meeting held in Gangi

The technology blockchain and genetic certification were the key topics of the conference which was held last August 12th in Gangi as part of the Festa della Spiga. The event was organized by the Gian Pietro Ballatore Research Consortium, with the participation of:

  • CORERAS;
  • University of Tuscia of Viterbo;
  • Sosvima;
  • LAG ISC Madonie;
  • LEGACOOP Sicily;

The topics covered were those related to two cooperation projects SFINGE and CIRCE

both financed under measure 16.1 of the SICILY RDP 2014-2022, which supports cooperation and the transfer of innovation.

SFINGE aims to equip the cereal supply chain with an Innovative System for the Certification of the Quality of Cereals in Sicily (SIC-S) using the certification blockchain for supply chain traceability.

The CIRCE Project has a more daring objective: to validate a method to certify the productions obtained with ancient grain flours and to guarantee the consumer about the identity of the raw materials used and the presence of specific molecules known to be involved in irritable bowel syndrome. associated with the consumption of cereals.

Having this information, accredited by research and innovation, could open up new markets for consumers who are now looking for specific products on the shelf.

I two projects have already achieved an important result

They have become a point of reference for a cooperative, whose establishment was promoted by LEGACOOP SICILIA and PROBIO.SI, which produces certified Sicilian Ancient Grain Pasta and is a candidate to use the operational protocols made available by the two projects.

The meeting was also attended by:

  • Prof. Pietro Di Marco (Coop. PROBIO.SI) who illustrated the path taken and the steps to follow,
  • the professor. Pietro Columba (University of Palermo and VP CORERAS) who gave an overview of the consumption of derivative products in Sicily and spoke of quality systems, which today benefit everyone, defimaking the results of the SFINGE and CIRCE projects exceptional, due to the important economic and social implications they will produce.
