The University of Hong Kong has launched the first postgraduate program on Metaverso technology

Hong Kong Polytechnic University has launched the city's first metaverse postgraduate program “Master of Science in Metaverse Technology”.

The program will begin in September 2023, according to the website poly.edu.hk, and aims to educate students about the nature of metaverses and the fundamental technology for building metaverses.

The program will be offered within the computer science department of the engineering faculty and will last for a period of 12 months. Students will learn, among other subjects, "pursuing careers in start-ups and major players in the metaverse sector", as reported on the website poly.edu.hk.

The metaverse is generally described as a 3D virtual space where people can interact with each other through games, virtual concerts, and other experiential events. The burgeoning industry has become one of the hottest topics over the past 12 months, following Facebook's rebranding to Meta Platforms.

Recent studies have estimated that the metaverse could be worth trillions of dollars by 2030. This has sparked insatiable demand from the mainstream with major tech companies looking to seize the opportunity.

The other universities?

Hong Kong PolyU is not the first educational institution to launch a metaverse program.

In February, the University of Ankara was the first to offer a course on NFTs.

In July, the University of Tokyo launched study programs in the metaverse under the university's engineering department.

In September, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) announced the Web3 Carnival, a series of online discussions to be held in November about the industry.

Although I don't have one yet definition clear, web3 enthusiasts describe it as the next generation of the Internet, built on decentralized ledger technology to democratize the web. Its popularity is driven by the rapid adoption of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and decentralized apps.

In early September, the University of Houston launched its metaverse campaign with AI innovation Consortium, Nvidia and TechnipFMC. It is part of the university's attempts to play a role in the industrial metaverse. Later in the month, Draper University and CEEK VR teamed up to launch a home of metaverse and VR hackers.
